By 1969 soviet inventor Genrich Altshuller had analyzed 40.000 patents to identify recurring patterns by which the innovation takes place. He extracted common principles by which his TRIZ (theory of the resolution of invention-related tasks) system was created.

TRIZ is a set of universal principles of creativity. Whatever problem you're facing, somebody, somewhere, has already solved it (albeit in a different situation). Creative problem solving involves finding that previous solution and adapting it to your problem. TRIZ identifies and codifies these principles so that they could be used to make the creative process more predictable.

Could we in a similar manner codify and identify principles by which discoveries in biology are made?
