A way to instantaneously control how far front row crowds can reach by changing the shape of the crowd control barriers.
Why?
  • It's not a concert unless a fan manages to get on stage. This setup makes it harder for people to jump over the railing.
  • Since you can control the crowd with just the railing, you can spend less on security.
  • A classic metal railing has the potential to hurt you if you get pushed against it by the crowd. this arrangement encourages space between the crowd and the railing.
How it works
Position 1
The design mirrors what we call "coffee fences". It is supposed to prevent people from jumping over the railing. It is almost impossible to get your weight across the railing without throwing your centre of gravity off the rails and consequently ending up on the floor. It could be overcome by teaming up with another person but so could classic straight railing. This one at least provides a challenge.
Position 2
By changing the angle on the movable joint between the ground and the first bend, It allows you to control how far across the barrier the crowd's hands can reach. It could help at entrances, allowing band members to walk and sign autographs without worrying about being pulled into the crowd.
The rails are also weight-sensitive. If the rail was in position 2 and you tried to jump over, Your own weight would cause the junction to rotate back into you and into position 1 preventing you from finalizing the jump. You would ruin the autograph session for everyone else and I think that would be enough of a deterrent to stop fans from jumping over.

After the fence leans into the crowd (position 1) it could leak some nasty smelling fluid so that people would step away. Then the entire fence can slowly move one step closer toward the crowd while the upper part straightens back. The movement is done via mini excavator-like tracks.
Repeat as many times as needed to push the crowd back. The fence could also send out electric jolts.

I suggest some kind of gas instead of a fluid. It is eaiser to clean :)

Goran Radanovic I don't think they could. I pictured the mechanism operating like one of those hydraulic doors. Fast enough to prevent you from making the jump but slow enough to not hit you and knock you out.
