Laptops are not ergonomic designs and we know that. There are several kinds of adjustments available to improve the design like stands and detachable screens. What I did not come across is a detachable screen with a stand to hold it in place.

The problem with stands is that although they elevate the laptop to eye level, the keyboard elevates with it making it difficult to type. Similarly, the detachable screens have nothing to hold them in place.

According to the idea, the screen will be detachable and held in place using a flexible metal tube. The metal tube can bear the weight of the screen and is also flexible so that you can adjust the height of the screen. The metal tube can either be detachable or it can be fitted in the laptop design (probably behind the screen). I have made a design (the cover image) resembling the idea.

I would like to invite you to help me improve it.

I used to think about this a lot while I was a digital nomad. I experimented with:

  1. external USB monitors


I usually had 2 additional monitors with me, positioned on either side of the laptop. The image featured above is not mine.

2. Pocket sized computer such as intel NUC

combined with a lightweight thin monitor (or a few) that can be positioned anyway you like.




3. Using the TV as the monitor with either a laptop, a pocket-sized computer or even the smartphone.

4. All-in-one computer, where the computer's hardwere is embedded in the monitor itself. You then place it anywhere you want and use a wifi keyboard/mouse.

5. dual screen laptop
I haven't seen this since the old Acer Iconia. It was my favorite travel computer. I opened it like a book so that both displays were positioned vertically, then used a wifi keyboard/mouse to work with

I doubt the metal tube thing would work out. It seems way too unstable for this. The best would be to simply rest the detached screen on a normal frame, the frame could have height and angle adjustments in itself and the screen would only be leaned on it. But that's probably already existing for detachable screens, no?

Povilas S Yes, the frames already exist. Darko Savic has posted pictures of the frames in his contribution.

Just to give you an idea of the metal tube I am talking about, this is how it is used - https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/USB-Male-to-Female-LED-Light_1600146027821.html. It can be bent the way you want to. A thiker metal tube, like in this one (https://snakeclamp.com/ or https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/hold-anything-anywhere-snake-clamp-review-giveaway/) is able to hold heavier weights in position.

Shubhankar Kulkarni I've used such tubes for my DIY tablet holder that held the screen above my bed. One downside to these is that they get bent out of shape with use. After a while, the curves aren't nice anymore.

Why not do away with the screen completely? Surely it'd be possible to get VR goggles that could replace screens. What would be the display could either be everything you see, like a really big screen that you can look around in, or alternatively the information on your laptop could be integrated into your real-world vision (This is the better option in my opinion), where you would be able to look at everything on your desk or in your office, but also have access to the information on your laptop.
