Why?
There are many accidents happening in the cities when drivers drive too fast, don't see the passengers at the crossroads, are drunk or don't see the red light. These accidents are especially bad if they happen next to schools and/or parks where children play. To save our children, make their road crossing safer and parents more relaxed to let them go alone in the school, I suggest putting automatic safety pillars next to cross roads close to schools.
How would it work?
Safety pillars are sometimes used to prevent cars from passing on the pavement or entering a pedestrian zone. The same system could be applied to the crossroads where a lot of children pass.
The pillars would be underground and would automatically lift when the light turns red for the cars. Once the pillars are up, green light for pedestrian would appear. If there is no traffic light, pedestrians could activate safety pillars by pressing a button. Yellow light would appear blinking on the signs 50 meters before the crossroad and the pillars would lift to clear the passage for the kids to pass.

"If there is no traffic light, pedestrians could activate safety pillars by pressing a button. Yellow light would appear blinking.." Do you mean the reflector-like lights on the pillars themselves? Or do you mean the light on the button?
It would be very dangerous to lift the pillars where there are no traffic lights to inform the drivers that they must stop. Especially when the pillars are rising, they might be hard to notice. There should at least be some lights or reflectors on the pillars themselves, but as I said, when they are only beginning to rise, this might not help. There should be a clear warning sign before they begin to rise.

Povilas S I will rephrase it. I meant the lights on the traffic signs indicating that you are approaching the crossroad. They are usually 50 meters before the crossroad. I think that should be enough to warn the driver, who can then safely stop and wait for the pedestrians to pass. But some light on the pillars could also be nice.
