Can we come up with a day's worth of activities where a group of friends can have fun while celebrating their friend's 40th birthday?
Backstory
This year several of my friends are turning 40. They are used to hangover-style partying that goes on for days. Each birthday should be different but we already exhausted all our ideas on the first guy:)
In my area, it's customary to surprise the birthday guy/girl with something extreme/special for their round-number birthdays. For example, people guerilla-decorate their houses while the person is sleeping, plaster their awkward photos on local billboards so that everyone knows it's their birthday, pick them up in a party bus that turns into a midnight street party in an otherwise peaceful suburban area, etc.
The general idea is to do something that makes the birthday person feel special in the company of their friends. The entire group should have loads of fun.
The day starts at midnight when the entire group surprise-pulls the birthday guy out of bed. How would you plan it it out?

  • All the members of the group shave their heads. You shave the birthday boy, too.
  • You dress like mariachi and play/dance to Mexican songs in the center.
  • You recreate scenes from the movies where actors were bold/shaved, take pictures with passengers (photo booth) and collect donations.
  • All the money you collect, you donate to local cancer research or cancer-survivor facility.
  • Than you go bowling and design bowls with pictures of your shaved heads on them.
  • You go to karaoke bar and sing the Forever Young.
  • You finish with a nice rave party.
What do you think about this way of shaving off the adultness?

Rent a small yacht and pull it around on a trailer while partying on it

I assume you don't live near a coastal area. If so, a yacht party would be something special/unusual.
Find a way to rent a small yacht and have a designated driver pull it on a trailer to pick your friend up at home.
Party on it while a truck tows the yacht to a lake. Have a mobile crane wait for you at the lake so that it can lift the yacht along with everyone on it and place it on the water. Let the party go on. If there are many of you, have several yachts/boats waiting on the lake. Tie them all together. Swim/party.
Have a few sober lifeguards on the crew.

Take them to a theme park with rollercoaster rides. Those are entertaining, regardless of one's age. The great thing about it is that it's a whole-day activity that restricts alcohol consumption due to the volatile rides and potential vomiting.

Go jogging naked in public, preferably along the main city avenue or in a similar, popular place. You could steal and hide the birthday guy's clothes to make him do it together with others.
I had the idea to do this myself as a stepping out of your comfort zone challenge but frankly didn't have enough guts to do it alone (maybe for the better). A company, especially a birthday party one, on the other hand, is a different story. Perhaps less chance to get arrested.
Wear sneakers and sports headbands only, to make it understandable that you run a "marathon". The birthday guy could wear a headband saying "40!" or something like that, to make him stand out. The group could also carry a long band in their hands, stretched over their heads, while running, with "Happy 40th birthday [his name]!" or a similar phrase written on it, to make the people around understand what's going on.
It's better to do this in daylight for a bigger challenge and to gain some reactions from public. Early morning is an option if you don't want to attract too much attention. Maybe it could be your morning hangover run for one of the days finished by a jump into a lake or something like that:)
