Use holograms of predatory animals, humans and large creatures to ward off pests like squirrels, rabbits and rats from the agricultural fields.
Why?
  • According to the food and agricultural organisation (FAO), at least 40% of the total crop is lost to pests every year.
  • Hologram based pest repellant mechanism can be automated and needs minimal human engagement.
How it works: (This idea was inspired by Darko’s idea.)
During the peak pest seasons (summers and springs usually), holograms are projected in the fields around the time when pests are most active (early morning and night typically). This can be done based on either cameras, motion sensing or periodic drones that scan the fields for the pests.
This system can be coupled with ultrasonic repellers for more efficiency.
The hologram projectors are installed around the fields. The specifics for their density (in terms of how many holograms to project, say, per 100-meter squares, can be determined.)

We used to use human hair taken from hairdressers to scare away wild animals from our crop fields. We would pack it in thin cotton and hang it on the low branch or a pole.
A good idea could be to introduce the olfactory effect to your holograms to make them even more realistic. I suggest using feromones.

Add to the illusion with audio and have the holograms be accompanied by speakers producing the sounds of the animals that ward off rodents. Meows, roars, what not.
I'm wondering whether the sound of predators alone would do the trick, as that would be far cheaper than holograms. Just have a system of cheap speakers in place. They could be sensor activated for movement so as to save energy.

Just as I mentioned in this challenge, sound repellents have some issues that need to be drastically improved. If they worked in a regular setting, they would indeed be much cheaper.

Great! Holograms would certainly have an effect on bigger pests like deer, boars, elephants, etc. Do you intend to use holograms for insects, too? Do you think they would be effective?

Shubhankar Kulkarni I don't know if holograms would be that much effective against insects. If I am not wrong, the spectral range of insects for light perception is quite different (they have compound eyes); and the holograms that are designed to repel insects must factor in this variable.
