A game that gets everyone at an event talking to one another. In the end, you draw a paper with 2 topics on it. You win if you're the fastest to locate the two people who are passionate about the topics you drew.
Why?
  • Help people break the ice and talk to each other.
  • It is easier for people to approach and talk to strangers when they have a reason/excuse to do so.
  • Indiscriminate speed dating between everyone within the venue.
How it works
Check-in
Upon checking in, everyone has to specify a unique topic they enjoy discussing. No two people can choose the same topic. If your first choice has been taken, you will have to come up with a second-best or go niche, deeper within your field of interest.
Meet everyone and discover their interests
Everyone has until the end of the event to talk to each other and find out everyone's favorite topic.
Win the prize
At the end, everyone picks a random piece of paper with two topics written on it. Whoever is the fastest to find both people whose topics are listed in the paper and bring them to the jury, wins.
All three share the prize. Sharing is meant to encourage people to go with others rather than continue searching for their own pair.
The prize is something cool and appropriate for the event.
Improvements
What would motivate people to not just move on to the next person as soon as they discover someone's favorite topic? What would get everyone to actually be interested in what the other person has to say?

"What would motivate people to not just move on to the next person as soon as they discover someone's favorite topic?"
Answer: Not just ask people about their passions. Passions can be just one of the parameters. There could be a list of predecided parameters. Information on all those parameters needs to be gathered. In the end, the random piece of paper will contain options from multiple fields (parameters). You should then identify people that fall in each of these categories.

Another way of getting to know each other through passions is a passion tic tac toe game. You give participants a tic tac toe grid and make them write one passion in each square of the grid. They mingle with each other, pair up and check their passions. When they find the same passion listed in both grids, they sign for each other in the appropriate square. The winner is the participant who has other people's signatures on three lines (vertical, horizontal, or diagonal).

To get people interested in others, you could have another winner who mentions to the judges everyone's passion. The first person to report to the judges with the correct answer is also a winner.

In case you are interested in more games like this, there is a list of some ice-breakers we used on Erasmus+ projects.
