An app where people exchange 1 on 1 lessons in random knowledge they never knew they wanted. Everyone is an expert at something. Put together a 30-minute seminar and teach your expertise to a stranger.
Why?
  • Gain new knowledge you didn't know you needed. Someday it could change your life.
  • If others are passionate about something, chances are that you could be too, if it's presented in the right way. Someone who is passionate about it might be able to present it in the right light.
  • Meet new people over interesting conversations. No fluff talk necessary.
  • Some people speak only when they have something to say. This is exactly that kind of interaction.
  • A way to practice your presentation skills.
How it works
An app where you are both a teacher and a learner. You learn from one person and teach the next.
You don't get to browse a database of all teachers/knowledge. Instead, you are given a few choices that you have to pick from.
As a learner
The system randomly shows you 3 different mentors (and what they are presenting). You select one and commit to attending their lesson.
As a teacher
You describe what you will be teaching and put together a 30-minute seminar/presentation. The system puts you in touch with the first person that chooses your seminar. When both are online and ready to beging, a 1 on 1 video chat is initiated.
In person lessons based on geolocation
The app would have a toggle where you can switch between online and in-person lessons. If you opt for in-person, the app pairs you local people. When there is a match, you arrange a meeting in a safe local venue.
Whenever you have time, you meet with interesting people who either teach you something cool or you teach them what you know.
Rating system
Reviews are mandatory. You cannot proceed to recieve or give the next lesson until you've rated the previous.
The more people appeciate your seminars, the higher your account score. Based on this, the system pairs you with people that are on the same level. So the better you perform, the better performers you get.
Private feedback to moderators
Additionally, you are asked to privately review/report anything to the app's moderators. This is for quality control purposes.

A modification of your idea for people that want to learn specific skills and don't like randomness. Participants get credits by teaching their skills and use this credit to learn another skill from someone else. This way you don't need to match with a specific person.

That's basically like any of the existing platforms similar to Skillshare but with a twist - instead of paying $ you pay with your own time/skills. Not bad:)

Good idea. The challenge might be finding two people that are interested in each other's ideas, since the point is to teach each other something completely new. It's not really feasible to search for someone with similar interests as you.
As for the presentation they have to prepare, I think they should have to upload a video or slides of it to their profiles so that it's available for everyone to view. Their profiles should be a repository of knowledge.

Goran Radanovic I forgot to mention that whoever you teach is not the same person that teaches you. When you assume the role of a teacher the system puts you in front of a random user that chose your topic from the 3 choices they were given.
When the roles are reversed and you get to learn something, you choose from 3 topics that the system randomly assigned to you.
Yes, a trailer of the lesson sounds like a good idea. Still, the lessons themselves shouldn't be pre-recorded. It should be live 1-on-1 with questions, etc.

I really like this! Sort of like Omegle for knowledge. As a person who likes to learn new things, I would definitely give this idea a try.
Thoughts:
  • Could add in the option for a follow-up class to learn a topic deeper or just to spend more time with an interesting person.
  • Would the topics you want to teach be vetted? I'm just thinking that maybe people would try to abuse the system and not actually teach anything.
  • How would you monetise the system? Would it just be advertising or subscription based?
  • Would calls/ chats be monitored at all by the app?

Danny Weir the review/rating/reporting system is there to prevent abuse and expose people who aren't playing by the rules.
Maybe extensions could be paid. That way, a teacher can use the first 30 min to make his topic interesting, then get paid by the hour if people want to learn more. That hourly rate includes some commission for the platform.
Chats wouldn't be monitored. If something gets reported to the moderators people can include screenshots, etc.

Darko Savic So there will be a system where a user can ask for a specific teacher if they want to learn more from the same teacher? How would you incorporate this function with the "assigning 3 teachers randomly and then selecting one"? Or you can rate and review and ask for the teachers you have interacted with. On the other hand, every time you want to meet someone new, you enable the "random" function. The "choosing specific teacher" function will require having a meeting system in place where the teacher and student could decide on specific timing for the subsequent meetings.
