A platform where local retired people can be hired as mentors or consultants to pass a lifetime's worth of specialized knowledge to younger generations.
Why?
  • Some retired people feel useless to society after retiring. This idea provides a way for them to feel useful again.
  • Some people might be bored or lonely after retirement. This provides them with an opportunity to meet and talk with new people.
  • During their career, everyone amasses a lifetime's worth of specialized knowledge. This is an opportunity for 1-on-1 mentorship from such an expert.
  • Everyone is an expert on their own experience. They likely know some things worth learning.
How it works
Retired people provide consultation and mentorship services within their areas of expertise. When registering with the platform, they specify what knowledge/field they feel comfortable passing on to the next generation.
People looking for specialized knowledge can search the platform to locate retired field experts nearby.
It's not necessary but could be good if the platform partnered with government provided retirement services.
Expertise providers
Nowadays, older people might not know how to use computers or the internet well. Because of this, they might need assistance to join/leave the platform as an expertise provider. Since retired people are crucial to the platform, it needs to make it convenient for them to participate.
The platform provides excellent customer service via phone, snail mail, and email. In cases where it makes economic sense, the platform can open physical offices where people can sign up in person.
Retired experts can be signed up by their friends and relatives. Customer service contacts them to confirm their information.
Work permits
The platform takes care of all legal aspects. The retired experts provide their services as freelancers under the platform/agency umbrella.
Safety
People can browse the platform to see anonymized expertise providers. To be able to contact some of them, people must first identify themselves (KYC). For retired experts to make an informed decision as to whether they want to meet, people should provide as much information as it takes about themselves.
First meeting
The first meeting can take place anywhere that is convenient for the retired expert. The meeting is free and aims to synchronize the learner's wishes with the expert's abilities.

I think at least some of the retired individuals would be happy to share their knowledge for free as long as someone is truly interested. This is because of the reasons mentioned in the "why" part of the idea - they might appreciate company, feeling useful again, and passing their knowledge for a good cause.
The platform could allow free courses for, say, students, people with disabilities, etc. Users could also offer help to retired people in exchange for skill sharing, they could help around the house, do shopping, or whatever the retired person needs help with.

I like the idea. However, are there not enough chat rooms, discussion boards, youtube videos and/or stackoverflows already on the web already that can answer questions and/or explain concepts? I am trying to think of a differentiator that old retired persons can offer in this regard but can think of none (other than the preference for the 1-on-1f mentorship you suggest).

Shireesh Apte you can't get experience from reading. It's all in the small details that a professional picks up during their career. They can't write it all down even if they wanted to. In-person mentorship has a bigger bandwidth in conveying these expertise details as opposed to transferring knowledge via text

Darko Savic Agreed, but you can also access videos on youtube or other platforms. Also, the collected knowledge of a larger order-of-magnitude people on the web is bound to be greater in content than the collected knowledge of one individual. However, as you mention, there are no-doubt intangible effects of in-person mentorship, that cannot be captured or conveyed on faceless websites.

You can also engage retirees who don't want to be mentors. Depending on their skills and with a little bit of training they can help with the administrative part of the platform, gathering information, making phone calls, etc. They will also feel useful doing their own part.

I love it. I'd definitely sign up. Learn from the mistakes of others, not yours. They can hire generalists, such as retirees who offer life advice—their biggest regrets and things they learnt about relationships, family, etc. They can have a self-help section consisting of those who succeeded financially and those who are struggling so that you can learn from both perspectives.

Retirees who are introverts or don't want to exert themselves with consultations can offer their knowledge via a video course. It's a great way for them to make passive income.
Since most people would want access to all the knowledge, I'd recommend a subscription-based service for the video section. It can be a platform such as Masterclass.
