A gamified financial punishment/reward system that encourages a group of people to maintain a streak towards a common goal. Everyone deposits the same amount of money. Anyone who breaks the streak gives some of their deposit to others.
Why?
  • A fun game that encourages friends to keep doing what they promised.
  • Three-fold incentive: 1. Friendly competition, 2. Lose if you break the chain of action, 3. Win if you can keep it going.
  • A great way to hold people accountable. Once you feel it in your pocket, you'll step up.
How it works
  1. A group of people commits to doing a difficult task daily for a specific amount of time.
  2. Everyone deposits the same amount of money. Divide each person's amount by the number of days the task has to be maintained. This is the daily value.
  3. Anyone who skips a day loses the deposits for all the previous days until the present. The lost money is divided between other group members who keep the task going.
A person who skips a day and loses a partial deposit can still continue the task the next day. By continuing they protect their remaining deposit and potentially win some money back when other group members skip a day.
In which scenarios would such a group contract/game be suitable?
Some that come to mind:
  • We will go to the gym and work out every day this month
  • We will come up with and share one idea per day for a year:)
  • We will meet and study together every day this semester
What are some other suitable scenarios?

It doesn't have to be money. Among friends, it could be a slap game

This would be feasible among some friends. Instead of money, everyone gets to slap the person that skips their duties:

I like it, it could also be turned into a type of league by tweaking the format just a little bit if you want to raise the stakes.
Users would be able to define what they are awarded points for and what may result in a reduction of points, or a further contribution to the "pot", then, after a set period, the person with the most points takes it all.
This could be a good way to promote keeping certain habits, but it could also be used as the basis of a real challenge among friends.

This is a great way to hold people accountable. Once you feel it in your pocket, you'll step up. One of the obligations could be a deposit for a month or a year to make it more challenging for people to back out. Speak to a stranger every day would be one of my challenges.

Goran Radanovic nicely put. I'm adding this to the "why" section

There are numerous use cases for this idea. I would certainly love to win some of my friends' monies, although I'll probably lose mine most of the time.
  • Use Duolingo to learn a new language daily
  • Write daily
  • Visit a new site in your city (or outside it) everyday
By the way, there are numerous incentives you can employ, instead of the winners take the money. Two of those I can think of are:
  • The grand loser treats everybody to lunch or dinner
  • The most consistent person gets to choose the next trip or activity of the friend group
I will definitely experiment this and let you know how it goes.
You might also have come up with an idea for an app.

I'm doing a "one idea per day for a year" challenge. The above was my idea #222, posted on 22.2.2022 🙂
