Dig a canal that supplies the Colorado and Rio Grande rivers with desalinated water.
Why?
  • A solution to California's drought.
  • Replenish the rivers without dependence on rainfall.
How it works
Along the way, the water can be desalinated by Ion Concentration Polarization so that (almost) freshwater reaches the river basins. This way, we will not have to rely on the vagaries of snowfall and/or rainfall to replenish the rivers. Year-round dependable water for the Pacific states. If we can dig the Panama Canal, we can certainly make this happen. Since ICP is a point-of-use technology, we can just as well desalinate water at numerous end-use-points in California, but building a canal from the Pacific Ocean to join these rivers may tap existing irrigation infrastructure and leverage economies of scale.
