A “shop the look” feature on Netflix for your favourite character from a Netflix show, that links products from various shopping websites for purchase.
Why?
Netflix has more than 200 million subscribers worldwide, a large proportion of which are the fashion conscious Millenials and the Gen-Z population. Netflix can make use of their influence on the tech savy population of their subscribers and offer them the option to “shop the look” of their favourite characters from various Netflix shows.
  • Netflix gets commission on each item sold through their link
  • Users get to buy curated looks inspired by their favourite characters.
How it works?
Netflix and other streaming services can tie up with major online shopping websites to offer their customers this service.
Under the “more info” section for any show on Netflix, there could be a “shop the look” tab that could re-direct users to the list of various characters from said show and links to various “looks” inspired by each character. Users could buy the entire look on one click by putting in their size preference or chose to buy one or few items from the look. This tab could also open up automatically after the user completes watching a show to prompt them to browse and buy.
Netflix could also use this feature to sell Netflix official merchandise as well as official merchandise from various shows. (Disney Hotstar can also benefit from this feature greatly).

Firstly, love the idea.
I think Netflix would be better of becoming the official online shop, rather than working with existing platforms and producers.
Netflix could also expand its operation to include manufacturing said clothing by simply purchasing such a clothing company or simply writing a clause into their contracts with any outfit designers on any of their own production which gives them the sole right of selling said clothing.
The only reason I mention these two options is that a quick google search of "Buy Thomas Shelby Outfit" takes you straight to the tailor's website, as long as this is possible it wouldn't really be necessary for the manufacturers to pay Netflix a percentage if people could reach them without going through Netflix relatively easily. I know Netflix has a huge reach, but the designers already get that exposure from simply having their products on screen. But if Netflix could become official distributors I think this could be very cool.
It could cover novel costumes (outfits in squid game / branded merch) as well as normal, stylish, everyday clothing (a piece of clothing that an actor wore in a scene).

Hi Spook. I was thinking along the same lines as you are when you refer to quick google search of "Buy Favourite character look". However, what I realised during such searches is that there are several shows for which this works, but I was completely unaware about. There could be many people who are not crazy fans and would not go around searching for particular looks from the show, but however, if provided an option of browsing through looks they just watched on the streaming platform, might be tempted into buying. It is more like the case of "I did not know I wanted it until I was given the option".
I agree with you about the novel costume idea as well as the everyday stylish clothing which could be huge. More importantly I suggest that the platform showcases curated looks from head to toe, including clothes, shoes, bags and accessories, to make it easy for people to buy the entire look and not having to go through the hassle of mixing and matching to obtain their desired look.
The only problem I see is with productions that are popular but that are not their own. In such cases Netflix might want to obtain license to market looks in the shows name. The platform might as well stick to their own productions only for this feature as even that would be a huge market.

Aashi Agarwal Buying the entire look of the character might soon become undesirable if the proposed shopping feature became popular on Netflix and many people bought the looks of different characters. The most popular characters from the most popular movies/TV shows would be mimicked most often and the phenomenon would become known as a cultural cliche.
But as long as the site would let buying separate items, not only the entire look, this shouldn't cause a problem.

Povilas S I suggest there be multiple options to accessorize the same outfit and the user can chose from these options. Having said that, I do understand your point. If it were to gain mass popularity then it could become a problem. In that case, having the choice of purchasing items separately will definitely help.
