A loose paint that is sensitive to pressure and friction is used to paint the dance floor. It slowly wears off as people dance on it. Underneath there's a nice picture that is being slowly uncovered.
Why?
  • Fun and aesthetics.
  • Seeing that there's a constructive "job" being done makes dancing even more enjoyable.
  • Surprise element.
  • A way of visualizing how much people actually trample on the dancefloor and which parts of it are being trampled on more.
How it works:
There could be different formulations of the paint depending on how quickly one wants it to wear off. It could last a month or so until the picture is revealed, but it might as well be made just to last one night, during a single dance party. Each party could have a different picture hidden under the paint, the picture could represent the theme of the night, or (in cases where paint is made to hold longer) - a theme of the month or a year, etc.
The problem with the paint that wears off very quickly (during a single night) is that the "recycled" paint will then be everywhere - on people's shoes, debris of it lying on the ground, etc. You'd then perhaps need a brush to sweep it off for the picture to be clearly visible.
To simplify the process of changing the images underneath the paint, large stickers could be used. That way you wouldn't need to use two layers of paint. The staff would stick the image to the floor, then paint the special paint on it and when the paint wears off, tear it off and stick another one. The smooth surface of the sticker might also help the paint to wear off.
When the paint would start to wear off and the dancers would begin to see parts of the image, they might intentionally gather to the places that still need trampling on to reveal the rest of it, this would be a kind of puzzle-dancing.

Wear-off paint on the floors of buildings - to reveal walking patterns

Imagine the floor of corridors, or even big rooms, being a light yellow that slowly wears off to become a standard grey. People tend to walk on the same path more or less, exactly at the center of the corridors, around the corners, etc. Also, without realizing it, we take the shortest path possible. It would be very interesting to show these patterns with the fainting paint. It may even reveal unexpected patterns, and even lead to amelioration in the interior design of the building. Let's take as example obstacles, that people need to walk around. It will be more obvious when the floor becomes grey exactly around the obstacle.
The way to do that would be to cover the floor with colorful paint that wears off and does not damage the floor. Or as you said, you can even paint pictures that reveal themselves as the paint goes away.

You can also do this to make abstract art. When the upper layer of paint wears off according to specific walking patterns, those patterns will be, say, grey (as in your example) and interchange with yellow patterns in those places where people trample less.
You can even make a few layers of different color paint and select each layer to have a different wear-off time. That way after some time people walking would make a color and pattern mosaic on the floor.
But for this, it's best to have a hall, not a corridor, because in the corridor you'd just have a mostly straight line in the middle, which is boring. The more chaotic trampling you have the richer such color mosaic would be. That's why the dancefloor is a very good option when it comes to artistic purposes.

Povilas S I like your idea of layers with different wear-off time! And I agree that the result would be much more impressive on a dancefloor. But we could still make office buildings more fun :-)

May be paint riddles on the different parts of the painting on the dance floor. Whoever answers the riddle first gets a free drink. This will be added motivation for dancing and uncovering parts of the floor.
