A service that creates a miniature replica of a place you once loved and wish to remember when you move on.
Why?
  • Having a miniature replica is the next best thing to actually visiting a place you once loved.
  • Rooms get redesigned, old houses get demolished, memories fade. A miniature replica is forever.
  • Kids are all grown up and moved out but you don't want to erase the memory of their existence from your home. Make a miniature copy of their room to freeze it in time. Then renovate.
How it works
Develop a process where:
  1. People take multiple 360-degree photos of the place they want to replicate. Once the quantity and quality of the photos are sufficient the next stage begins.
  2. The software stitches the photos all into one high detail, high quality image and converts it to 3D printer instruction file.
  3. A replica is 3D printed. Areas that require manual fixing are highlighted.
  4. One of many freelance artists gets the replica and starts working on it. They fix the details and color everything. Payment is based on the level of detail and agreed upon beforehand.
  5. High quality images are taken and sent to the customer to confirm that everything is OK.
  6. The replica is sent to the customer.
Where can the process be made more efficient/automated?

Miniaturized replica that shows how your childhood room evolved with time

I absolutely love this idea. It was only a few days back that I was trying to recollect how my room looked from when I was a kid, however all I could retrieve was memories of my room from my college days. I feel that this could be a great birthday gift for kids when they turn 18 years old, are leaving for college or as a wedding gift. I have one small suggestion to this idea- what if there was some way by which one could capture the evolution of the room with time as the child grows up. For example, lets say there was a wall in your bedroom as a kid that you used to decorate with posters that later turned into a wall for your projects/paintings/collages or photographs. Similarly what if you changed the arrangements around the room as you grew up. Could we capture this into the souvenir as well? One easy way I can think of is - an electronic display as one of the walls in the miniaturized replica that plays back how that wall in your room evolved over time. As for the changes in room setup, I donot really know how that could be done. However, this idea has great potential for a gifting business and I for one, would love to avail this service if it existed!

Evolution could be shown with multiple replicas sitting next to each other on a shelf

Darko Savic That could be done but I feel it would be more convenient if we could capture the essence in one single model. I think seeing the changes happen in front of your eyes (similar to a slide show) could inspire more emotions. Also, people would not have to pay for multiple models if we could tweak one single model to incorporate this feature as well. However, in the absence of a better alternative, even this would do just fine. What are your views on say having something like a 3D projector that can show all the changes in progression when switched on- just like a 3D movie. Once turned off, it could go back to displaying the view of the room from any one particular time period.

Keeping it digital?

The idea is awesome. I moved a few times and would love to have a memory of my previous homes/rooms.
The problem I could have is that the number of replicas of all of my previous rooms would be too much for my current room/flat. Also, I would love to have replicas of my student dormitories, Erasmus room, etc. To keep the database of all these, it would be much easier to just keep it digital.
Advantages
  • not taking space on your shelves
  • accessible anywhere and by any device
  • it could be done to be compatible with VR glasses - a complete virtual experience of your previous room
  • you could put a musical background (songs that used to play in your room, or voice of your mother yelling at you)
Disadvantages
  • it's not promoting art
  • it's not decorative like the miniature replica
  • it cannot be given as a present
  • it's prone to server problems and might be lost

Voice of your mother yelling at you xDD Actually that's probably a good idea for the replica room as well - to add sounds from your childhood that you used to hear in it. It could have a little tape recorder hidden in the replica and once you push a button you hear the selection of sounds from your childhood. This could also be digitized, it could have something similar to an iPod attached to it and you could add and remove sounds in a specialized playlist, tiny speakers would be installed in the replica room through which the sounds would be played. You could recreate the collection of your childhood/adolescence music.

Digital is easy. Just a 360 degrees image in very high quality and you're all set. You can do it with a phone.
People might not care about every room they ever lived in but I bet the main childhood room elicits special memories in most people. That one would be worth making a replica of.

Why just rooms? Why not actual 3D photos of anything?

The greatest memories could be captured and displayed not just in 2D (or virtual 3D) but in 3D using the same technology mentioned in the session text. Memories like your wedding, holding your newborn for the first time, graduation, meeting your idol celebrity, etc. You might also recreate the places you visited in 3D. This probably constitutes a separate idea.

I think making a "toy model" of every important memory might be too far-fetched and feel unnecessary/unnatural for most people, pictures would be enough in most cases. The childhood room is exceptional, however, first of all, because it's a childhood memory, so the toy replica fits the context, and second because it's a very specific and confined 3D space, so having a 3D model makes more sense than having just pictures of it.
However, making a model replica of the whole flat or a house that you lived in in the past and that was dear to you might also work in that regard.

Povilas S I am not saying they "should" convert every memory into 3D. But, apart from their childhood room, there may be other equally important places and happenings for a person, which they might want to store in 3D, and that should be doable. They could select one of those, or all if they have the space to display them.

Replica of your current house to also help you with rearranging furniture

I really like the idea of the replica room as a way to remember your childhood room. Myself, I would use it for all rooms that I have changed throughout my adult life, as well.
If the service was available now we could use it for rooms and houses we still live in, whether or not we plan to leave. In this case, the replica houses would double as a decoration testing tool. We could use the miniature houses to play around with the position of the furniture, without having to move the real-size ones. It would be a piece of cake to play with miniature furniture – as long as they are all individual pieces!
If we leave that place or do extreme remodeling, we would always keep the replica to remember how the place used to be.

Point cloud 3d Scanners

Kilroy470 on Reddit says:
So a cool thing, Im a 3d designer for industrial engineering and one of the latest technologies to become fairly common in the past 4 years is 3d scanning! We go out to location with a point scanner to take 1:1 3d scans of locations. It uses a combination of lasers and pictures to create dots for accurate measurements and those pictures can also be used for a Google Earth style view (centered at the scanner) for accurate measurements.
The software can then take that scan and make a 3d model that you can print on a 3d printer. Just set up the tripod in the room and with 2 or 3 scans (to remove 3d "shadows") you'll have a perfect 3d replica and the most effort would be put into painting the 3d model.
Only downside is that the hardware/software is very expensive.
Eta: not sure which scanner we have, but the technology is called a "point cloud" scanner

A VR recreation of important memories

This is a combination of what Juranium and Shubhankar Kulkarni suggested in their contributions. While I think that making physical 3D models to represent various important moments from your past might be too complicated and unnecessary, making VR representations of memories that you treasure, want to keep from forgetting, and even experience more clearly and vividly seems like a good idea.
For conversion into a VR space in which you can look around using a VR headset, it's best to take 360-degree panoramic images or at least take many pictures from different angles which you or a dedicated software could stitch together to create a VR tour.
But even if you want to turn an old memory into a VR experience and just have one picture representing it, it's also possible to turn it into a 3D image by adding an illusion of depth with dedicated software. You couldn't look around in such a case unless using 3D modeling to recreate the rest of the surroundings from your memory and adapting the colors to the color panel from the picture, but nevertheless, it's better than nothing.
You could also add other sensory input - sounds and possibly even smells and touch to make the experience richer. It would be cool if in the future neuralink-like devices could convert memories into sensory VR models directly from your neural circuits.

Great find. To make it a scalable service there would need to be a DIY version that people can do with their phones. I imagine people would mount the phone on a makeshift rotating stand. Then running the scanning software they would slowly rotate it around its axis. This would be repeated multiple times so that there is plenty of material for the software to work with.
