A silicone water bowl shaped like an ice scraper. In the evening pour in some fresh water for stray animals. In the morning take the ice out of the bowl and use it as an ice scraper for your car's frozen windshield.
Why?
  • Wild and semi-domesticated animals need water during freezing winters. Make it a habit to provide fresh water for them. At the same time put the frozen leftover ice to good use.
  • Snow might be piled on top of your car and fall on your seat as you open the door. With this solution, there is no need to open the door and retrieve the scraper. Due to freezing temperatures, a fresh one is ready for you outside, every morning.
How it works
A silicone bowl for drinking water. The inside of the bowl is made in the shape of several robust ice scrapers. If one of them breaks during scraping, you have multiple spares.
The shape could be something like this, but bigger. Made from a liter of water:

possibly even this, although the thin blade would break more often:
It could even be the size of a small shovel, fitting a few liters of water.

Hahaha, cool DIY solution! Did you manage to create one and test it if it can break the ice? The ice on my windshield was so strong that I broke my plastic ice scraper on it. Also, ice scrapers have a rubber edge to protect glass from scratches. How would you deal with this? And how do the animals drink water through the ice? :D

Juranium When you pour the water into the silicone mold, it's not yet frozen. The animals have a few hours time to drink before it freezes. You fill it in the evening.
I have scraped my windshield with various objects before. With ice as well. It works well as long as the surface of the scraping object is totally level (which frozen water is). In my experience, ice is not tough enough to scratch the glass. Sand particles in the ice could be a problem though.
I didn't test this yet. I have to get some moldable silicone rubber and pour it around a big suitable scraper.

I didn't have an ice scraper, and my neighborhood cats need water 🙂

Darko Savic In addition to what Juranium said, how exactly would you make a shape to form the scrapers? The form of the scraper is too small for animals to have enough water to drink and also uncomfortable to reach, the water would also freeze quickly in a narrow form.
You mentioned in the text that the form would comprise many scrapers, does that mean that they would be layered on top of one another and you'd be able to separate them somehow? Still, then the form would be deep, but narrow, maybe a part of a larger form could be separated and shaped as a scraper, that way it would be easier for various animals to drink from it.

Povilas S the scrapers would be side by side. All except the last example were thick enough to keep the water liquid for a little while. The 2nd example was even bowl-shaped. In the first example, the handle is the thinnest part. 4-5 cm diameter for the handle, the head can be bigger. This is good enough for cats, rabbits, birds. Dogs, deer, foxes can drink from the head part.
