An alert on truck dashboards that tells the driver the vehicle won't be able to go under a bridge or overpass without crashing into it
Why
  • It's a pretty common problem in most parts of the world and this could mitigate it.
  • The property damage is significant enough to warrant it's own solution
How it works
A camera sits on top of the trailer. It's connected to a computing system that is able to judge distances from a distance. one such algorithm is the Gilbert-Johnson-Keerthi algorithm .The document is mostly vector matrixes and hard to understand so this video might be of help. By using that in conjunction with SOLID ,which is a software library on Github that helps run intersection and proximity querries, It is possible to compute if or not the truck will make it through the overpass without getting clipped. I am sure this system is in use somewhere so this idea is more of an alternate use for It.
If the math says the truck won't get through a warning flashes and the driver has enough time to slow down and figure another route
Extra resources
Since this is a video based input system the Autoregressive–moving-average model (ARMA model) is another approach worth investigating

The issue on highways is that the driver struggles to find an alternative route when encountering such a problem. To avoid going in that direction, I recommend a navigation system that's connected to each bridge/overpass via a sensor. The driver inputs his destination and height of the truck. The navigation system immediately alerts him of low obstacles and offers an alternative route.

Goran RadanovicThat would be great, plus it transfers over to when self driving cars take over

Tesla Semi (truck) will eventually run on autopilot. It should be able to prevent the truck from hitting an overpass. Other manufacturers will have to catch on if they want to stay in business
