Traffic congestions have increased substantially in the last few decades. Our standard of living as a race has risen and a larger number of people can now afford automobiles. This idea proposes the use of personalized traffic signals that are broadcasted directly to the car's dashboard. These traffic signals will replace the traditional traffic lights that are placed at places where roads intersect. The use of personalized traffic signals can reduce the effect of traffic congestions by directing cars in a way that resolves the congestion in the most efficient way.

It could be used along with map services so that the automation system does not only consider the current traffic state but makes arrangements for everyone's movement so they get home in the shortest possible time. In cases where the is traffic congestion is in a low population area, it is only normal for such places not to have traditional traffic lights. The system will automatically detect the congestion and resolve it. It is likely that most of the congestions will be prevented from happening at all.

Such a traffic system will do more than to let people know when to move or stop moving. It can recommend a different route or tell you when it is more efficient to take a different means of transport. The estimation of the time taken to travel will be more accurate. Emergency situations can be prioritized without having to use a siren.

Traffic congestions usually result in a waste of time and money. Traffic congestions also have a pronounced effect on the invironment since they are a major source of noise and chemical polution. Violation of traffic rules will be easier to detect and the violators will be penalized more justly. Voice commands can be incorporated into the traffic. Artificial traffic congestiaons can be created to slow down fleeing criminals when necessary.

If all vehicles were self-driving and all connected to a network at all times, a master AI could anticipate and resolve congestion before it happens. There would be less unnecessary breaking and thus lower energy use and less wear and tear.

Hi Samuel Bello! Could you describe with an example how this system would work? If I am stuck in traffic and I have such a personalized signal installed in my car, how would it be able to navigate me better than Google maps? What kind of instructions would it give me?

Shubhankar Kulkarni It is supposed to work with your google maps and improve it. Yes, it will navigate you better than if you use google maps alone.

The way the system will work is that everyone will have their red, green, and yellow lights on the dashboards of their cars. An algorithm will be put in place to calculate the optimal set of traffic instructions that, if followed, will resolve traffic congestions quickly. Existing traffic lights only act based on the density of automobiles that are on the lanes that intersect. The proposed system is going to make them even better since it will not only consider the current situation but it will account for everyone's destinations.

Samuel Bello Google maps does account for the destinations of the users and also suggests the quickest way after considering the traffic. The personalized signal will also have the 3 regular lights, right? It could tell you to either "stop" or "drive". How would these two signals (instructions) improve traffic management, more so when there are more cars in front of you and you can't move unless they do? I am trying to understand the algorithm the app will use. Am I missing something?

Shubhankar Kulkarni Everybody will have to use the personalized traffic lights for it to work. That way there will not be cases where you have to move and the cars in front of you will not be directed to move too or leave some room for you to pass. The personal lights can have more than just the three lights. They can have indicators that tell you to change lanes or reverse and take a different turn. They can give you directions on a map when it is applicable.

The algorithm that controls everyone's movement is just like the ones that control older, traditional street lights except that they will put more variables into consideration and there is more flexibility since people can be in the same lane and have different traffic instructions this will open up new possible movement combinations that can be chosen from to resolve traffic congestion more efficiently. Future scenarios can be simulated using the car owner's location history and the efficiency can be further improved by inputting your destination into the system.
