Visited the museum in my city and was surprised by finding paintings made by the world's most noted painters - Van Gogh, Renoir, Gauguin, had some sketches by Picasso...
Because these are cream of the crop painters, yet somehow their work ended up in Belgrade, in a museum that was closed for years, I thought about an app that would map out where the works of the top painters are.
Why:
- To suggest new travel destinations for art lovers.
- To reveal hidden gems to locals
- To promote local tourism within countries. For instance the most famous Serbian painting is not in the capital, rather in a museum of a nearby industrial town.
Solution:
You could select your favourite artist, like Vincent van Gogh, and get a visual presentation of where his original art is located on a map of the world, or of a continent. Based on how much of his art is in one place, the circle would be bigger.
The app/site could also provide some backstory to the painting's "life" because there are interesting stories behind some of them. Often, they were donated to museums by kings, queens, or other royal figures, or wealthy eccentrics, they get bought for astounding sums, get retrieved after being stolen... You could get a visual representation of its travels on the map as well.
Art pieces also get moved a lot for exhibits, so you could get notified if a painting of your favourite artist gets moved within a certain radius of your location.
Obviously, the app could suggest similar artists to the one you selected‚ recommend different ones...

I could be totally wrong about this, but I presume that some museums don't advertise famous paintings due to security. I wouldn't be surprised if paintings are moved around to various museums for that purpose.

Goran Radanovic Forgot to post the answer to this.
I don't think that's the case. There are a lot of examples of museums advertising moves and borrowing. It would be against their business model otherwise as they have to put in a lot of guarantees to get the artworks in the first place.
They just don't loan out some vital artworks and loan others only to other museums whose security matches their own.

Street art cities is a map that shows the locations of street art in your area, I know this idea focuses on contemporary art, but this is a cool starting point and it might inspire some design ideas for your eventual product.

That's a cool idea! I would also like to find out which artists are exhibited in a specific museum. For example, which famous artists are in Belgrade museum? This would make choosing between different museums easier. This is something the Art Cyclopedia doesn't offer ;-)

I like the idea! I would also want to visit a local art gallery or a museum if I knew a Picasso painting is "hiding" there.
What can make the job of creating such a feature a bit easier is the Art Cyclopedia, where you can write the name of the painter, museum, or artwork title and find information about it. I am sure it doesn't cover all the paintings, but the site also shows you locations where the most popular paintings can be found. If the locations were interactive and could be, for example, imported to your travel map in Google Maps, it could be great!
