The Problem
Organs fail. 17 people die each day waiting for an organ transfer , which is crazy when you think about how long waiting lists for organs are. In the Uk alone, over 3.5 thousand people in 2021 were waiting for a kidney transplant leading to 312 deaths from kidney failure alone. For the ordinary person, organ failure might as well be a death sentence.
How about the unordinary man? Organ trafficking is a global business with a broker in Egypt reporting 20 to 30 organ sales per week The illegal organ trade generates from 840 million to 1.7 billion in revenue annually. The whole business model is taking organs from the poor who are desperate and in need of the money and selling them to those rich enough to buy them.
Solution
Animal organs,
Here's the catch, If 10 genetic edits on a pig kidney were enough to make it work in a human body, what other animals are likely candidates for such a procedure?
Ethics aside, I thought primates would make sense but I was wrong, we have too much of a difference in immune systems and diet. That and I don't really think we should be killing off the last of the big apes.
